Temecula Valley High School is home to a chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, "a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance in public and private schools in K-12 education, dance studios, cultural/community centers, performing arts organizations, and post-secondary education" (NHSDA Homepage).
The National Dance Education Organization outlines the goals for a secondary NHSDA chapter as follows:
"To promote a desire for life-long learning in the field of dance.
To encourage an understanding of, and an appreciation for, dance as an art form and develop knowledgeable audiences for tomorrow.
To identify honor students (grades 11 & 12) for nomination to the NDEO Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement Award, one of the highest honor programs for dance in the United States" (NHSDA Secondary Page)
"Student Induction is a lifetime recognition, and the NHSDA designation remains with the student's record. However, it is up to the discretion of the Chapter Sponsor to determine what constitutes an active chapter member and if the student is eligible to wear the honor cords at graduation" (NHSDA Chapter Sponsor Handbook)
Induction Criteria
Induction into the NHSDA is based on 3 categories: demonstration of character, grade point average (GPA), and earned participation points. (NHSDA Chapter Sponsor Handbook) Please continue reading below for more information on each of the above criteria.
Demonstration of Character
"This category reflects the student’s demonstration of collaborative teamwork, motivation, and leadership. The Chapter Sponsor should evaluate the student’s demonstration of the above qualities through observation during classes, rehearsals and other dance program activities, as well as demonstrated leadership (e.g., serving as a dance team or club officer, participation in service projects). [...]A minimum “Above Average” rating in this category is required for NHSDA induction. The student must not display any conduct or behavior that jeopardizes their own safety, the well-being of others, or the integrity of the NHSDA program. (These include, but are not limited to, disruptive or aggressive behavior in or outside of the studio, bullying or mistreating others, and unprofessional conduct in classes or rehearsals.)" (NHSDA Chapter Sponsor Handbook)
GPA
Students must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for induction.
Earned Participation Points
Students must earn a total of 30 participation points for activities such as "dance classes, rehearsals, performances, research, workshops, or community service activities" to meet the induction criteria. (NDEO NHSDA website). Points earned for induction mirror the points students earn toward their Varsity letter. In most cases, once a student earns their Varsity letter, they will also qualify for induction into the NHSDA (as long as they also meet the other induction criteria). Points earned during a normal, in-person school year are as follows:
Large performances (such as Dance Evolution or Valley Fusion) - Alliance = 3 points; Vitality = 2 points; Ignite = 2 points
Football games - Alliance = 2 points; Vitality = 1 point; Ignite = N/A
Small performances / events - All teams = 1 point
Choreographing a full dance / piece for a team performance or project (over 1:00 long) - All teams = 1 point
Choreographing a small piece for a team performance or project (less than 1:00 long) - All teams = 0.5 point
Points during the 2020-2021 school year ONLY were earned as follows:
Completion of Final Semester Project, on time, earning 100% - Alliance = 5 points; Vitality = 4 points; Ignite = 3 points
Participation in any recorded performance (TVHS Arts Fair, rallies, etc.) - All teams = 2 points
Completion of Unit Projects, on time, earning 100% - Alliance = 3 points; Vitality = 2 points; Ignite = 1 point
Each additional 30 seconds of choreography in choreographed pieces that are at least 1 minute in length - All teams = 1 point
Outside participation in dance and dance related activities (performances, competitions, assistant teaching, etc.) - All teams = 1 point each, with a maximum of 3 points in this area
Students should keep track of their points on their own, using a worksheet like this or their own spreadsheet. It is each student's responsibility to figure out whether or not they meet the induction criteria and apply for induction once you meet the criteria.
Once you apply, Ms. Lewis will double-check that you meet the criteria for induction. If you do, you will be inducting during the next induction ceremony.
